The settlement was originally named because multitude of Western Red Cedar trees in the area. Cedar as a settlement is said to have existed prior to 1888. The Sub area of Cedar is located at the very south end of Nanaimo, between South Nanaimo and Ladysmith. It is commonly referred to as, Cedar by the Sea. Cedar is mostly rural, however, the downtown of Nanaimo is only approximately 10 km away. The heart of Cedar lies in the picturesque village of Cedar-By-The-Sea.
Cedar is located in the tranquil and picturesque countryside of the east coast of Vancouver Island, on a broad forested peninsula that juts out into the waters of Stuart Channel in the Strait of Georgia. The rolling landscape of Yellow Point is rural and mostly undeveloped, providing all the pleasures of country living. The small community of Cedar on Yellow Point Road is the main settlement in Yellow Point.
There is an abundance of trails, parks and beaches. the area is well known for its appeal to outdoor enthusiasts. Diving, hiking, kayaking and biking are just a few of the popular outdoor activities. Some of the popular outdoor areas offer views looking towards Mudge Island, and Gabriola Island. Ocras, seals and sealions can also be seen from time to time.
There are a number of new builds and the area is said to be slated for new development as well as the creation of a golf course fills the Cedar area with exciting investment opportunities. There are a number of families and schools in the area. Looking toward the coast around Yellow Point, there are luxury homes along the waterfront.
